The Year 4 Garden Team joined me outside today. We began by weeding the vegetable beds and thinning out the carrot and beetroot plants.
Next we loaded the decomposing twigs and leaf litter into one of our new composting stations. Katarina and Danyall used the loppers to cut up the larger twigs to help speed up the composting process. The worms had already started to get to work composting the waste. The children picked out a few of the prize worms to add to the wormery including one whopping great one which Chloe estimated was 25cm long!
We checked the vegetables for any signs of pests. Danyall spotted some caterpillar eggs on the cabbage plants and Ella-May discovered some holes in the cauliflower leaves where snails has been nibbling.
Some of our produce was ready to harvest including some garlic, courgettes and onions (some of which were huge!). The children gathered up the vegetables ready to deliver to the school kitchen tomorrow. We will be saving the garlic for the School Food and Flower Show in September.
