Amazing Archery

Year 1 have just started a topic about castles. Today we had a visitor come in to school to tell us about bows and arrows. He was called Dave McArthur and usually he is our school electrician. He told us how bows and arrows are made, why they are used, how to be safe when using them and we even had a go at holding the bows and feeling what it was like to pull them back. You had to be very strong! We were very careful and passed an arrow around so that we could see how they were made.

He gave us some pieces of ash wood to make our own arrows we are going to decorate them so that they are all different and easy to recognise.

We found out that when people went into battle they took flags to show which side they were fighting for. These often had coat of arms on them. We were all given a picture of our own family coat of arms.

Did you know that goose feathers are the best kind of feathers to use for arrows? The best feathers come from the left wing of the goose… do you know why?

We would have liked to shoot the arrows but we couldn’t as there are lots of laws to keep us safe. Have you ever done archery?
