On Thursday 26th April 2012 we went to Skipton Castle. It was very cool. We went in the dungeon, it was scary when the guide turned the lights off. We shouted “HELP”. We learnt that they ate vegetable jelly, eugh!
The toilet was just near the kitchen. The poo and wee went straight down into the river. To wipe your bottom you put some moss on a stick and wipe. There was no sink to wash your hands so they wiped them on cloaks that hang in the room. It would have been very smelly!
The walls of the castle were 4 metres thick and they have never been broken by enemies. The castle used to have a seesaw drawbridge, enemies attacking would either be trapped outside or fall into the dungeon. They would fire arrows or pour boiling water on attackers.
What else do you remember from our visit?

I feel like I have learned lots about castles from reading this blog post Year One so thank you for sharing. I’m not sure I would have enjoyed going to the toilet in the old days, sounds a bit disgusting

I had fun at Skipton Castle. My best bit was going in the dungeon but I didin’t like the first fireplace because it was very smelly! I’m glad we have toilet paper because I wouldn’t like wiping my bottom on some moss! I wouldn’t like to wipe my hands on someone else’s cloak either because there would be lots of germs.Yuck!
I enjoyed the dungeon too, though I am not sure I would have liked to be a prisoner in there. It would have been very dark all the time with only a candle. I think castles must have been smelly places and I am very glad we didn’t have to use the long drop! I enjoyed learning about where phrases like “it’s your turn” and “good night, sleep tight” originated from.
Looks like you all had a brilliant time at Skipton Castle…I would be scared too if the guide turned the lights off in the dungeon, and who would eat vegetable jelly (eww)! I have also learnt lots of things about Skipton Castle!! Your class assembly was fantastic, i also learnt things from that!
I hope you enjoyed your vist to Skipton castle. it looked fun and wished I went.
