Year 5 and 6 are beginning a new project this term and joining 69 other Bradford classes in the Real Maths Challenge. Year 6 started last week and relished the challenge to take part in a reasoned mathematical debate on who was the best player of “Down Hill Chill”. It was a lot of fun. Each challenge lasts 2 weeks and we have to submit our results by video to the judges who then award points which determine how we progress in the leagues. This Challenge helps us not only to develop our maths communication, number, data handling and reasoning skills but also helps us develop our learning muscles.
Which learning muscles have you used?

I am very excited about this project and look forward to seeing how we progress in the league tables. Not only do I think we have children with good mathematical understanding, but we have ‘learnerate’ children who know how to use their learning muscles to succeed.
Good luck to everyone taking part in this.
Hello Years 5 and 6!
We are also looking forward to taking part in the ‘Real Maths Challenge’ for Spring Term. Our brains are switched on and we are ready to go. The children are really looking forward to using ipods to record the videos!
Maybe we will see you at the face to face competitions!

Well this down hill chill game is getting our heads switched on. I cant wait to do more fun maths activities.
Glad you are enjoying the Down Hill Chill challenge. What makes a good player?
I wonder if any of the teachers can beat the best score that we’ve had in Year 6?
That sounds like a challenge Mrs Donovan. What was your score? I came third in our maths class so I think I must demand a rematch!
We had some fantastic times in our maths class, it was also interesting to see the lengths of our jumps and top speed on the track.
I did the down hill chiil game and i love it i had the second best score.
I had entered the real maths challenge and I liked it because it was fun because I got to go to the ICT SUITE and got to play down hill chill on miniclip.
I had used my noticing muscle because when i wrote my explanation I had to notice if I used mathematical vocabulary and other important stuff.
