Have you read a newspaper this week? Have you watched the world news on television? I hope so.
You may have heard about the terrible accident on board the Italian cruise ship, where lots of people lost their lives when the ship sank. It has been reported that the Captain (who should have stayed on the ship until all its passengers and crew had got off to safety) jumped into a lifeboat first. It has been reported that he said he was “pushed into the lifeboat” and that it was not his choice to save his life first.
What would you do? Is it human nature to save your own life? If you had been the captain of the ship, would you have stayed on board the sinking ship knowing that you could loose your life? Is it ok to have a job which asks you to put your life at risk? Do people in charge of others have a responsibility to make sure that they are safe?

No i wont be the first one to jump because i am the captain and the captain takes care of everyone.
I hope you are the captain of the next ship I travel on Muskan! I would feel safe in the knowledge that you were looking out for the safety of others.
Do you think everyone would do the same?
I don’t know because some poeple might live the poeple on board and the captain might jump of the ship first.
Mrs Donovan can i ask you a question
If you were the captain what would you do?
Tahnk you for asking me a question Muskan. It shows you are really understanding how to take part in a philosophical discussion.
I have to say Muskan that I am not sure. I have never before had to face a danger like that. I would like to think that I would stay, but I would also be thinking of my family at home and wondering if I would ever see them again. This might make me jump into the life boat.
Thank you Mrs Donovan for answering my question when i said i will stay last and then when you said about our family i will miss them but also what about the otheres on the boat they love there family to and they will miss there family to.
I am saying that i love my family but i will still be the last one to jump of the boat because i am the captain and the captain takes care of everyone that are on the boat.
I would not jump off the bout first because i am the captain and it is my resposerbilaty
This is a very interesting debate with some very inteligent contributions.
Muskan, I think you are right about the Catain having to take care of everyone.
I think it is natural instiinct to want to save your own life, but that as we grow and learn we can try hard to develop our character and our values so we can do the right thing in a situation like this. Only people who have the strength of character to care for others before themselves should be allowed to beCaptains.
What would you do if you were not captin,Muskan?
If i wasn’t the captain and tha captain jumped of first iwill still be the last one to jump of and make sure everyone is save .
If you think the boat is going to crash get yourself and then get the other people in the boat .
I would like to think that I would be a strong captain and see my duty through. However I think it’s difficult to say until you are in the situation. I am pleased to hear that Muskan would stay though – a true leader.
If you are the captain you should let everyone on board
go first because the captain is the one that hepls poeple
wnen they are in
danger or they are hert.
I think you are right muskan you should let the crew go first. The crew should go first because the captain takes care of the crew not just him-self.
Armaan Mahmood bradford moor primary school
I would be strong and let all the people out then I would check the whole ship to see if every body is out then I would leave.
Do you mean physically strong, or strong of mind?
The captain is more important than the pasenger becouse the captain was doing all the hard work and if the captain goes last the boat might sink.
By Ziyad from Bradford Moor Primary School
I think if I were the captain of the ship, like Muskan I would feel responsible for all of the passengers and so would not leave until I was sure I could do no more. I do however agree with Mr. Harrison that until you meet a difficult situation it is hard to know exactly how you would react. I also think it is important to not judge the action of others without knowing all of the details. From what I have heard the captain is not being portrayed as acting well but are we being given a fair picture of the truth by the media?
An important point – can we trust the media to give us a fair picture of what has happened? This brings us to a big philosophical question – what is truth? A straight ruler looks as if it is bent when it’s put in a glass of water. Does everybody have their own version of what is true?
For example, children may have different ideas about what is true compared to an adult, because they have not yet experienced as many things as an adult. So, a child may say that it’s ok to stroke all dogs because they are cute and friendly. However, an adult may know that dogs can be vicious. So, the child’s version of the truth is ‘true’ to them but this may change as they become older and get more experience.
I also would like to think I would stay till the end but you can never tell how you would react!
Wow a big question. I would like to think I would stay but if I was afraid I think it would be difficult. I would like to think I would want to help everyone first. A really tough question.
Niether would I I will never be the first one to jump off because I am the captain and the captain always let’s the passengers leave before because it is my ship.
I think it is the captians job to make sure that everybody is safe so then he could save his life swell as everybody else. If I was a passenger on the boat and I would want to save everybody else before and even if I had put myself in dangoure I would still have known in my head that I had saved loads of people and that would make me a good person.
If I were captain I wouldnt jump off the ship becauce im the captain and I wouldnt let my passengers be all alone in the ship.First I would let all my passengers go first.A captains job just isnt to steer the wheel of the ship but its also to take care of his passengers.
I agree Iram and also to lead his crew. If he had done his job properly and not been such a coward he could have avoided all the chaos that seemed to happen because the crew were leaderless. Maybe less people would have died. It is such a sad story.
I agree with you Iram because a captain’s job isn’t just about steering a wheel but it is about taking care about your passenger.
If I was a captain before letting them jump off but make sure I have everyone(counting them or a easier way) ,then I would let the adults with children jump off,
when everyone has jumped off before I jump off I will quickly check my boat form where everyone had been gathered(maybe everywhere, if I have time) then I will jump off, even if I don’t get a chance to jump at least my passenger are rescued(safe).
You have really thought about how you would manage this difficult situation Misba. Come and talk to me in class – I think we could find you a leadership job (as well as being our Mental maths monitor)!
I agree Iram the captain should be last and his crew should go first.
Iram you are right a captain should not leave the boat or ship
first because they are responsible of everyone also if someone gets heart the captain will be blamed.
If I was a captin of a ship I would first check if everyone is safe make sure no-one is hurt and put others before me because if I didn’t then my crew would think I am the worst captin for example I let a child alone in the ship my crew would throw me in the sea.
If I was the captain my job would be my duty and I would fullfil it by helping the people, who were suffering, on the boat. I would risk my life to save them and not ruin their holiday by letting them die. I think duty should come first then yourself. So I would have saved those people if I was the captain.
What noble sentiments Haleemah. Having a sense of duty, where you put others’ safety before your own is a good idea, I think. I commend your comments.
Mr Shaw Bradford Moor
You have responsibility for the passengers and crew and I would not leave them on there one I will ring the rescue crew.
Thank you for your reply Waqar. What sort of job would you like to do when you’re older? Have you ever considered being a ship’s captain?
I agree with what has been discussed here. I think that as the captain it is your job and responsibility to put the safety of your passengers and crew above your own. However, the media does like a dramatic story and maybe he has been unfairly portrayed. I did read about another crew member who was a musician and went back on the ship for his violin! Would you put yourself at risk to save a very treasured possession?
That’s an interesting thought. You do hear of people who drown in ice-covered lakes trying to rescue their family pet dog, but a violin? Surely a violin is a replaceable item?
I wouldn’t go back for a violin. If it mean’t so much why would you take it on a ship. There is always a chance that the ship will sink!
That’s interesting Katie. Why take it with you in the first place? However, if we left all things we loved at home, I’d never take my little boy out of the house!
I would like to think that I would ensure that I have done whatever I can to save others before leaving a sinking ship. On the other hand if I panic, I may just jump overboard and not even think of the outcome of my reaction.
May we never experience such a calamity.
If I was the captain then I would jump off last and ring the rescue crew to take my passengers. Then I will take all of the presures things away and sail of onto a smaller and little boat. This is because I want to take care of my passengers and the captain has responsibility of his/hers job the captain, who is incharge of the ship, cant tell a passenger to control because the passenger wont know what to do that person might crash the ship.Thats why the captain has to take care of the ship what if someone gets injured the captain was responsible for this. The captain can get fired from the job that work for months and years for becoming a captain was for nothing thats why if I was the captain I would jump of last.
That’s interesting Idrees. Why give up on something that you’ve worked so hard for?
If I was the captain I woud have risked my life for others because so much people are presures to lots of people and I would have been just a ship man not famous like popstars. It will be my duty if someone choaked, fainted and have got injured it is a very hard job to look after somebody. If I was the captain I would have had lots of responsibility to the passengers it will be a very hard job and it is very dangerous but when im older I dont think I will actually be a captain and it is not just about the passengers it is about steering the right way and must know where the place is just say if somebody doesent know where to go they can get fired it is a very dangerous and difficult job.You need months and years of training but they must get payed about £79,432,391 that is a lot of money to get and they must get tired they must get money not to get tired and they travel along way they always travel every single day .
Some interesting points Daniel. Thank you. By the way, was there meant to be a decimal point in the figure that you suggested as the captain’s wage? Over 79 million pounds sounds a lot for a captain’s salary.
….
Well if you stay on the ship you will become world famous and save peoples lives!
If you don’t stay on the ship you will not die!!! (Yay life!)
But I think you should save your life! It’s your life before others!
Hi, I think the captin should of jumped when it was totally the right time because if you knew it was going to stay still you could jump in the lifeboat last.
Hi. I think that the captian should stay on the ship because he was in charge of the ship. He was responsable for the other people on board.
He was probably scared he would lose his life so he left the ship knowing he shouldn’t
have. He probably was scared he would lose his life.
I think he should of saved but i think I would have left.
I think that he should of got off the boat but he should of waited as well. He is meant to get off the boat last but instead he got off first. So he did something wrong and made a big mistake. He says he slipped or got pushed on to a lifeboat but some say he is joking. I dont know what he did because I wasn’t there but I think he wanted to save his own life as well as the pasengers. But if you were on a sinking ship you would want to get off as well. So thats just my opinion but im not sure what he did so it’s not an accusation. But we will probably find out what happened from the news some time. Thank you for reading my blog I hope you will read my next one.
It’s an important point, Eleanor, to say that you were not there. We can’t guess what happened can we?
I think that you shoud wait until everyone is off the boat because it is your dutty when you are the capitn.
Then agian in difficalt situations you may not think strate so you will try and save your self. But if I was in the capitns situation I would have made sure everyone was off then got off my self because people the captin will go down with the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would stay on board because it was his job and because it makes a point by saving a 100 rather than 1.
But he might have got off to save his own skin.
But I think he should had stayed on and saved 100′s.
I would save 100′s of lives for mine because it would be my job to so I would stay on board. If he was married he would’ve saved his life to keep his wife happy is also a point.
I think it is doing him good besides it is boring waiting.
On the other hand he shoud not have done that since it is tradition.
If I was the captain I would save myself first then save the people next it’s every man for your self! And like I say save yourself not other people. The good thing is he saved some people and he saved himself. Although the bad thing is he jumped off first he should of jumed off last. I think its “EVERY MAN FOR THEMSELVES!!” It would have been nice to save some more people the captain was being a bit selfish. He should have swam because he had life jacket and let the people who could not swim have a life boat.
As the captain, you definitely have responsibility to protect the passengers!(this is a good deed)
ON THE OTHER HAND YOU HAVE TO SAVE YOURSELF!!! YOUR LIFE IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!! (although this is a quite selfish action.)
My opinion is you have to react quickly to save everyone. Then again, you can’t do everything some lives will be lost and you just have to accept it. In my mind you should save as many people you can without putting yourself in massive danger.
I like the way you are using brackets in your sentences, Guy, to give more information.
The captin shouldnt have jumped because he should have waited for the people on the ship to jump first, not a very good captain. I think he was being sellfish.
I agree with you i think the captain was sellfish he should have let the people on board go of the ship first.
I would not get off first because I would like to make sure everyone is safe and ok. Because i might lose my job. What he did is he did not make sure his passengers were safe and went and left everyone to deal with it themselves.
This is why i think he should jump off the boat. because he might have family he might have children you don,t know.
I think when the captain said he was pushed into a life boat I think he jumped. Also he should have stayed on board until all of the passengers were off to make sure everyone was safe. Also he should have stayed on board because it is his job.
I think he should have got off to save his life and leave all of the passengers. And he would rarther save himself.
I actually think that he should have saved all of his passengers not him because that is his job and when he jumped into the life boat he was just thinking about himself. He also could have got arrested for it because he was not doing his job right.
I would not get off first because it would be my job to keep them safe. But he didn’t!
He has not done his job properly.
He should of stayed with the passengers because he is the captain so he should make sure they are safe. But if you were in that situation you might panic. But he should not say to stay in their rooms.Thats why people have died, because they were trapped. He should be aware of rocks. He said he was just visting a friend.
.
I would for definite jump and forget the others. You, or any other person, would not like it if they died.by safa bradford moor
I would get out onto a life boat if I could see one. I would enen try to help some poeple.
I would’nt be the first one to jump in because as you said the captain takes care of everyone but after all my passengers are at safety I would jump in.
By Ayesha at bradford moor primary school.
hi there i am from bradford moor primary school and i am saying no i will not be the first one to jump of the ship because this is my ship and if i jumped of first who will be looking out for the people on the ship and taking care of them and also i should be the one taking care of everyone because it is my ship and i am the captain.
The captain did all that hard work so he should get to jump in the lifeboat first. If he jumped in the lifeboat last he might of died.
By Uzair bradford moor primary school
hi i’m here from bradford moor primary school to say that i would let the passengers of first then i would go the people are more impotant than me it’s my job to keep them safe.
So how many people survived on this ship
If I was the captain I would be responsible.First I would get all the passengers off before me.As a responsible captain, I would check the whole ship for the passengers and when everyone is safe then I would leave the ship.
I wouldn’t jump out first I would let evry one out first the then I would jump out.
if i was the captin i would get everybody off first if not i would feel guilty for eva
Well I think it depends on how bad the crash was and if it was like the titanic then i would defently get of first but if it was sinking realy slow in shallow warter then i eould get off last
If i was the captin i wold save as meny pepol as i cude befor i wold get of
A good captin all ways goes down with there ship . If I was the captin I wold run rownd checing all the pasengers were of the ship then get of.
We have thought of at least 3 other jobs where you put your life at risk. These are: Fire Fighter, Army and Police Service. These people, who do a dangerous job, don’t think of themselves, they put other people first. This is what the captain of the ship should have done. Thankfully, the majority of Y3 S1 Literacy children agreed that they too would have stayed on the ship to help others.
It was all the captins folt he jumped of into i life boat but he could of swam because he had a life jacket on he saved him self he should of saved the people
Ineed to inprove my literacy and my Maths.
I will be the last one to jump of because i am captain and i take care of everyone.
I Think the captain should have staid on board the cruise ship, because he was trained to save people in an emergency situations, so it was his job.
However in training he wouldn’t think that he would die, so this fear may have effected his decision to leave the ship.
If I were the captain of the ship and the ship crashed I will save everyone’s life because I don’t want people to die
If i was the captian and the boat crashed i will jump of first because i want to save the children .
My techer mr watson says if you get stuck it is good.
I wouldn’t jump in first because the water will probably be tooo deep
