Growing Caterpillars

In Nursery we have been looking after some baby caterpillars as part of our new topic about ‘Growing and Minibeasts’.

Our Caterpillars

Our Caterpillars

We have been learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar and have been looking closely to see how the caterpillars are changing.  The caterpillars we have are still very small, we are waiting for them to grow, then form into cocoons and finally emerge into butterflies.  We have been measuring the caterpillars and will continue to do this every week to see how much they will grow.

Here are some of our life cycle pictures.

We used non-fiction books to find out information about the caterpillars, we now know that a butterfly drinks a special liquid called ‘nectar’ which they get from flowers.  We have been using our investigation table to find out lots of information about the caterpillars and have enjoyed making predictions and recording our findings.

Our Investigation Table

We have been working very hard and are very proud of our work, hope you like our work too.
Please comment on our work.

Wow,nursery. I love your work, I would like to ask some questions.
Where did you get the caterpillars from? How did you get them, like did you put a piece of paper underneath it and put a jar or a glass on top if it? Also do you feed them,if you do then what do you feed them?

I think caterpillars are one of my favourite insects. When we were over at Drummond Road recently we spotted some furry caterpillars. I think its amazing how they turn into butterflies. I’m looking forward to seeing some pictures of the cocoons.

I love your life cycle pictures and would be really interested in visiting your wriggly caterpillars. The children in Year 6 are doing some revision at the moment on lifecycles and they would love to come and visit too. You could teach them a lot about caterpillars I’m sure.

Thank you for all your comments.
We got the caterpillar’s from a special store, they are in a special sealed container that includes the caterpillar’s food, so we do not have to feed them. They have enough food in the container, to last them until they emerge into butterflies. Then our job will be to release them. We have been looking after the caterpillars by handling them very carefully, without shaking them. We have been learning about what caterpillars eat in their habitat through non-fiction books and on the internet. We have found out that they eat different types of leaves. Please feel free to come and look at our caterpillars and ask us questions about them.
