Walkie Talkie's

Role Play....use on the building site- passing on instructions - need a tall wall, a delivery at 4p.m, a progress report, we have had 3 bags of sand delivered, etc. Be a roving reporter, police officer, fire officer. This incorporates "reasons to talk and form sentences".  Linking to CLL. Stimulus and Response.  Navigation....to other person, find their way, find an object, buried treasure. Use description eg; the pirate finds his way to his treasure past the lightning tree, next to the pond, near the rock - prepositions. Somebody on board a ship directing helicopter to land. Positional language. Using language in realistic context emulating real life situations. Game of fairy steps or giant strides.....5 steps forward etc. Children really have to think about the listener - compose their conversation, etc; be aware of audience.  Question and answer (without visuals)  e.g,  I'm thinking of an animal, is it a dog? No. Is it brown? Has it got 4 legs?  i.e. 20 questions approach.

Remote control toys

Children learning 2/3 part instructions. Relating to things children enjoy through ICT . Use instructions to carry out tasks. Go forward, backward, right, left. (May have wrist bands on children with right, left wrote on them).  Younger children having access to early ICT.  Stimulus and response. Make scenarios for the bugs/vehicles to travel along..make a mini jungle, paper trees/plants - navigate through, avoid the crocodiles and snakes.  Use small world accessories. Manual dexterity. Make a road, traffic lights, mat, etc - use for scenarios - ie, getting from point a to b. Could be the shops, zoo, etc. Plan the mat - use grids, use moss and natural materials, mini signs, people.

Ideas......jungle, shops, desert, safari, fairytale land, a story eg, The Hungry Caterpillar, Race Trail. Various levels of control for varying abilities.

Metal detectors

Prepositional language - on, under, over, etc..  Maths and extending language.  Children exploring indoors and outdoors. Materials used and their properties, sorting, classifying and naming. Exploring and developing own play. ICT on/off switch - cause and effect. Realistic things for role play - themed areas. Cross curricular. Language...describe the materials and their properties, paper, foil, metal, sand. Natural, man made. Extended language - attract/ repel. Use in variety of situations - sand, hidden under boxes, fabric, great for treasure hunts as examples in walkie talkie section. Great for observation skills, recording information - don't have to write could use talking points, easi speaks, talk time cards with findings attached. Mark make and pictorially record. Role play - become an architect, find the treasure, be a time traveller, detective, do a building survey before the construction team come in. Problem solving -lost X and can't find it - what is the best way? Use dress up clothes to match role play.

Talking Photo Albums

Make picture and match words to it. Audio to letters and words, could be the alphabet. Words have meaning. Encouraging writing in a different way. Sequencing - story of Goldilocks, very clear stages. Modifying - aural, orally, visual, then written. Enhanced language. The child being the storyteller. Attach items and describe eg, a feather - tell me 2 thing about it -  it is soft, it comes from a bird. Good for number lines, can use other things than number, sparkly beads, etc. PSED, happy faces, sad faces, looking at emotions.
