Cars - Maths in Motion ( CMIM ) is a piece of software that combines ICT and maths. The aim of the software is to allow small groups to work together in teams to set up a 'virtual' racing car in an effort to win a race. Using relevant mathematics, including plenty of practical work, the software will help raise levels of achievement whilst at the same time creating an exciting and motivating work environment. The Cars - Maths in Motion software allows children to change variables to alter the performance of a formula 1 car and then race it around a virtual race track against other cars. This allows for races between other pupils and between other schools. The maths skills involved include percentages, measuring distance, fractions, ratios, scale, approximating and calculations. Children work in teams of four at KS2 and teams of two at KS3/4 to create a car and successfully test it in a series of practice laps; they then set up a pit team strategy involving tyres and fuel to complete a race for a given track, number of laps and weather conditions. For more details see the CSH website Education Bradford supported over 50 schools last year with support from the city CLCs to raise standards in Numeracy through the Challenge. This involved training and support for all participating schools and the organisation of a number of face to face competitions and online races. This culminated in a final race that produced a Bradford champion for KS2, KS3 and KS4. 2009 KS2 champions - Peel Park Primary reached the National Finals and were winning the race when they ran out of fuel less than a lap from their first pitstop. 2010 KS2 champions are competing in the National Final Further details are available by clicking on the relevant links on the menu. Cars - Maths in motion (CMIM) 20010 - 2011 Season The CMIM season for 2010 - 2011 will be run on the same lines as last year with approximately 6 online races with the top teams qualifying for a Bradford Final at each KS. We will continue with the play off system that proved popular last year to allow all the non-qualifiers a chance to reach the Bradford Final. Below is a summary of the project for this year, training and Face 2 Face races will be available via Greenhead and Challenge CLCs . Please browse the rest of the CMIM area for further information about last year's competition and how the software has helped schools raise attainment and confidence in maths. * Full training and e-mail / web based support (face to face support available if necessary). * Autumn and Summer Face 2 Face races. * Trophies, medals and certificates available for schools taking part. * Entry in 6 online races and Bradford Finals Please note that we need you cars on Edmodo by 5pm on the Wednesday before the race on Friday The races take place at 10am on Friday so that results can be posted by 12 Nooon on race day |
